"What's the best POS system for a pharmacy in Nairobi?" "Who builds affordable mobile apps in Kenya?" "Which CRM should a 10-person agency use?" More and more people type questions like these into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI answers, and they get one short answer with a few names in it. If your business isn't one of those names, you're invisible to that customer. That's why **Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)** has become one of the fastest-growing search terms this year. Here's what it is and what to do about it.

SEO vs AEO: what's different?

The good news: AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. AI answers lean heavily on pages that already rank and on sources they consider trustworthy. If your site is slow, thin or hidden from crawlers, it won't be quoted anywhere.

How AI assistants decide who to recommend

  • Can they read your page? Content that only appears after heavy JavaScript loads, or sits behind a login, is easy to miss.
  • Is there a direct answer? Pages that answer a question in the first sentence or two are easy to quote.
  • Do other sources agree? Your name, services, location and prices should match on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
  • Is there proof? Reviews, case studies, named authors and mentions on other reputable sites all signal trust.

The AEO checklist for your website

  • Serve real HTML. Make sure every important page loads its text without waiting for JavaScript. (We rebuilt this site so every page is prerendered for exactly this reason.)
  • Lead with the answer. Start service pages and articles with one or two sentences that answer the main question directly, then explain.
  • Add a real FAQ to each service and product page, written the way customers actually ask.
  • Use structured data: Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, Product, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList. It tells machines exactly what your page is about.
  • Show prices or price ranges where you can. "From KSh 20,000" is far more quotable than "contact us for pricing".
  • Put a real person's name on your content, with a short bio and links to their profiles.
  • Keep facts identical everywhere: business name, phone, hours, services and area served.
  • Decide on AI crawlers. Your robots.txt can allow or block bots such as GPTBot, Google-Extended and PerplexityBot. If you want AI tools to recommend you, don't block them.

Beyond your website

AI answers often pull from places you don't own. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and active, collect reviews regularly, list your business on reputable directories in your industry, and earn mentions on other sites: partner pages, client case studies, local news, podcasts.

Quick test: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the exact question your ideal customer would ask. Note who gets recommended and which pages they cite. Those cited pages show you what "good" looks like in your niche.

How to measure AEO

  • In your analytics, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar sites.
  • Run the same set of customer questions through the main AI assistants every month and record whether you're mentioned.
  • Track branded searches (people searching your business name). They often rise after AI tools start recommending you.

Common mistakes

  • Writing vague marketing copy ("innovative solutions for your needs") that answers nothing.
  • Hiding prices, locations and contact details in images.
  • Different phone numbers or business names on different platforms.
  • Publishing lots of thin AI-generated articles. Answer engines favour pages with real expertise and specifics.

AEO isn't a trick. It rewards businesses that explain clearly what they do, prove it, and say the same thing everywhere. Do that, and both search engines and AI assistants find it easy to recommend you. We build fast, prerendered websites with structured data, FAQs and clean content built in, for businesses in Kenya and worldwide.
